To use Austrian motorways and expressways, you must purchase an electronic e-vignette (digital vignette) before entering the tolled section.

Motorways and expressways may only be used upon payment of a toll, while main roads and secondary roads can be used free of charge.
The toll obligation applies to vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of up to 3.5 tonnes: passenger cars, minibuses, light commercial vehicles and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes. Classification is based on the maximum permissible laden mass stated in the vehicle registration document.

* Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes do not purchase an e-vignette, but instead pay the distance-based GO toll.

Types of e-vignette

The e-vignette is available for four periods of validity:

  • 1-day e-vignette – available in digital form only
  • 10-day e-vignette
  • 2-month e-vignette
  • Annual e-vignette – valid from 1 December of the year preceding the vignette year until 31 January of the following year, i.e. for a total of 14 months

* No separate e-vignette is required for a trailer (utility trailer or caravan): in the case of a vehicle combination, only the maximum permissible laden mass of the towing vehicle is relevant.
* The e-vignette is not valid on special toll sections, where a separate section toll must be paid: A9 Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnels, A10 Tauern and Katschberg tunnels, A11 Karawanks tunnel, A13 Brenner motorway, S16 Arlberg tunnel.

The toll calculation is displayed by the system once the vehicle and journey details have been entered.

ℹ️ Online purchase and required data

The payment for the road use entitlement is made online. Registering the vehicle takes only a few minutes. The following data are required:

  • Registration number
  • Country of registration
  • E-mail address
  • Mobile phone number

When placing the order, you must provide the vehicle's registration number and the country in which the vehicle is registered, then select the start date and the period of validity.
The system requires an e-mail address and a mobile phone number for contact purposes. The mobile phone number is required because the link to the confirmation is also sent by SMS, thus ensuring that the user receives the confirmation even if delivery of the e-mail is impeded for any reason.

Upon successful payment, the system sends a receipt and a QR™ SMS code containing the vehicle's identification data and the period of validity of the purchased entitlement.

⛔ Penalties

The Federal Road Toll Act (Bundesstraßen-Mautgesetz 2002) sets out in detail the legal consequences to be expected if someone enters a tolled road without having paid a valid toll:

  • Substitute toll (Ersatzmaut): from 1 January 2026, €200 for passenger cars, with a payment deadline of four weeks. This is not a fine, but an out-of-court offer by the toll operator; by paying it, the matter is closed.
  • If the substitute toll is not paid, administrative proceedings are initiated, in which the fine may range between €300 and €3,000.
  • Checks are carried out by the toll operator's inspectors, the customs authorities and the police, as well as by an automatic number plate recognition camera system.

Here, via the registration portal, the required proof of toll payment can be obtained online in just a few minutes, and it is recorded in the official register of ASFINAG Maut Service GmbH.

Components of the registration service

With us, the e-vignette is available together with the Comfortia and Auxil services; their fees are included in the registration fee.

Under Comfortia – if you mistyped your details when placing the order – we will change the licence plate number, the country code, the vehicle category, the destination country or the start date of validity free of charge on one occasion; the system checks for obvious typing errors automatically and, where necessary, manually as well. The order may be cancelled and the full amount refunded at least 24 hours before the start of validity, with the exception of the annual e-vignette.

Under Auxil – if you receive a fine for a reason related to your order – we provide legal assistance within 180 days of the order: we act as your authorised representative before the competent authority, submit an appeal, and initiate a payment deferral or a reduction on equitable grounds. In justified cases, we may also reimburse the amount of the fine, up to a maximum of EUR 300.

Further details can be found in sections 4.1 and 4.2 of the General Terms and Conditions.
